Lip blush can give your lips a beautiful flush of colour that lasts for months – but it’s important to take good care of your new makeup so that you can enjoy its benefits for as long as possible. If you’re considering LIP BLUSH you’ll want to read this first! In this blog post, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about the healing process, aftercare, and more.

1. What is Lip Blush?

Lip blush is a type of permanent makeup (or Cosmetic Tattoo) that involves gently implanting pigment into the lips to add colour and definition. It can be used to enhance the natural colour of your lips, or to create a new look altogether. Lip blush is often used to give the lips a healthy, flushed appearance, and it can last for months or even years with proper care.

So how does it work: a tiny group of needles or single needle pick up pigment and deposit it into the upper layers of the skin. It can be used to correct asymmetry of the lips, even out tone and help make the lips appear fuller. Unlike regular tattooing, lip blush is designed to fade and this helps give a very soft, natural effect whereas traditional tattoo’s use much stronger pigments and are implanted much deeper in the skin.

2. What does the process involve?

The Lip Blush process usually takes around 90 minutes depending on the extent of the treatment, not including your consultation. First, your technician will clean and prep your lips for the procedure. Next you will look at colours, we recommend choosing a colour similar to your everyday lipstick. They will then draw on a shape – this is where they will work to create a better shape, and correct any asymmetry that you may have. Finally the technician will begin to implant the pigment into the skin using a delicate shading technique. To finish you will be given aftercare instructions on how to look after your new Lip Blush, and an aftercare balm will be applied to sooth your freshly tattooed lips.

3. Who isn’t a good candidate for Lip Blush?

PMU Lips is not suitable if you:

  • Are under the age of 18
  • Those pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Those with epilepsy
  • Are undergoing cancer treatment
  • Have a skin disorder in the area
  • Have a history of keloid scars
  • Are taking prescription acne medication

4. How to choose the right Lip Blush colour

There are a huge range of colours to choose from; light, dark, bright or muted. We recommend choosing a colour similar to your favourite everyday lipstick. Remember this colour will be on your lips for a number of months so make sure you choose wisely.

Many clients go for a soft colour with similar undertones to their natural lip colour, the end result is very natural and will suit any occasion or makeup look. You also have the option of wearing regular lipstick on the top if you fancy a change of colour.

5. Does lip blush hurt?

The Lip Blush Process isn’t as bad as you may think, and we do everything we can to make you feel comfortable. While we would never say that Permanent Makeup is totally pain free , it really is manageable! In order to get the best results possible we also recommend keeping your lips moisturised in the week leading up to your appointment. Hydrated lips are easier to work on, and if the pigment is easier to implant your appointment will be shorter and you’ll feel much more comfortable.

6. How long does lip blush last?

Lip blush can last anywhere from around 4-12 months, but this does depend on a few factors such as aftercare and lifestyle. If you drink alcohol, smoke or spend a lot of time in the sun or on sunbeds then your Lip Blush will fade quicker. Another thing to consider is the skin care you use. If you use lots of exfoliating products this will cause the pigment to fade quicker.

7. What affects the longevity of Lip Blush?

Many factor will have an impact on how long your Lip Blush results last for, for example:

  • Skin type – typically those with oily skin find the pigment will fade quicker
  • Lifestyle – things such as smoking or sun exposure can affect the longevity
  • Skincare – products such as retinol or manual exfoliants can accelerate fading

8. What does the healing process involve?

The healing process is pretty straightforward – you will be given lip blush after-care instructions at your appointment, and it’s important to follow these religiously. It’s normal for the lips to look a little bit swollen and red straight after the procedure, but this will subside within a few days. During this time they will be sensitive so be careful when drinking hot drinks and eating spicy or salty foods. The colour will also be dark immediately after the treatment, during the healing process it may get even darker, but once fully healed the colour will soften and lighten by about 50%.  Please don’t judge the lips on the immediate results as they will change quite considerably through the healing process. You will be given an aftercare balm to apply during the healing process, this will help to keep your lips moisturised and alleviate any itchiness you may feel.

We recommend you avoid any sun exposure, heavy exercise, swimming, saunas or steam rooms for two weeks after your appointment. If you plan on getting any injectable treatments we advise waiting until 4 weeks after the second session of your treatment has been completed so that your lips are fully healed.

After about 5-6 weeks your lips will be fully healed and you will be due to return for your touch up – this session allows us to assess how the colour has healed, and reinforce any areas that need a little extra work.

In order to get the most out of your Lip Blush it is important to keep them moisturised and protected from the sun – we recommend using an SPF lip balm to make sure they stay looking their best for as long as possible!

Important info: If you have ever had a cold sore before you will need to obtain a course of antiviral medication from your GP/pharmacy/online pharmacy, The trauma from the treatment can trigger an outbreak, which if it happens will be sore and uncomfortable.

You should start taking these 3 days before your treatment and 3 days after. Look for acyclovir, zovirax or something similar.

9. Conclusion

Lip Blush can give you beautiful, long lasting results. It’s important to remember that the healing process is gradual, so don’t be discouraged if your lips look a little bit different immediately after your appointment. Lip Blush is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a more permanent solution to get better shaped, more defined lips!
